Description:

Abstract:

Remote Automatic Weather Stations (RAWS) are maintained by Federal and State agencies for the purpose of environmental monitoring. The National Weather Service, among other federal agencies, maintains a RAWS database, and monitors the weather data collected by this network.

Purpose:

The weather stations are particularly important for monitoring the weather influence on wildland fuels for fire danger calculation. . In addition, the RAWS provide a data source for fire weather forecasting in remote areas. The observations presented on the latest Boise Fire Weather web pages, are the latest data received at the National Interagency Fire Center.

Supplemental_Information:

The time label for each observation is in Universal Standard Time, commonly referred to as "Zulu" time, or "Z time". This is the local time at the prime meridian at Greenwich, England, which is the boundary between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The local time for time zones around the world is measured from this reference.

The U.S. Mountain time zone is 6 hours behind "Z" time during the summer (daylight savings time), and 7 hours behind during standard time. So, 00Z corresponds to 6 PM Mountain Daylight Time (1800 hrs local time). 12Z is 6 am MDT. Around the world, weather balloon observations of the troposphere, and lower stratosphere, are made at 1200Z and 0000Z, which corresponds to 0600 and 1800 MDT.

About the information on this U.S. Government server This operational server maintains a current database of meteorological and hydrological data, historical data, and written information generated by the NWS or received from other official sources. In addition, this server accesses in realtime a selection of current official weather observations, forecasts, and warnings from U.S. government sources for use by the national and international community. In an effort to enhance the science, experimental products may be accessible on this server and care must be taken when using such products as they are intended for research use.

This server is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Timely delivery of data and products from this server through the Internet is not guaranteed. Official NWS dissemination systems which can provide timely delivery of data and products are listed below.

NOAA Weather Radio, NOAA Weather Wire, EMWIN®, Family of Services (FOS), NOAAPORT, and your local National Weather Service Forecast Office.

Separated lat long DMS using left, mid, and right functions. Calculated decimal degrees from DMS. Deg = Deg; Min.m = minutes + (seconds/60). .d = Min.m/60; d.d = Deg + .d Copied results to new column as value; reversed sign of long to be negative value West). Concantenated " <http://www.boi.noaa.gov/Firewx/RAWS/RAWSOBS/"> + {state} + "_" +{name} + ".htm" to get URL. Edited URO to replace blank spaces with underscore _ in name portion of address where name was more than one word or shortened the name if too long to match the RAWSOBS list printed from the web site. Spot checked URL's for working - not lal locations had working url. Placed zero in Agency column for those not listed on URL list; deleted those from active file and saved to inactive file 5/04/01 (235 records). Deleted URL file name column (temporary for comparison and matching) and corresponding temporary state column. Saved Excel file as dbf for importing into ArcView.
